Not all sneakers are created equal. The wrong shoes turn a fun workout into a painful mess.
What You Want
Flat, thin soles - You need to feel the ground. Thick cushioning sounds nice but kills your balance and timing.
Snug fit - Your foot shouldn't slide around inside. Every slip is energy wasted.
Lightweight - You're doing hundreds of small jumps. Heavy shoes add up fast.
Good Options:
- Cross-training shoes
- Boxing shoes
- Minimalist trainers
- Indoor court shoes
What to Avoid
Running shoes - That chunky heel cushion? Designed for forward motion, not vertical bouncing. Throws off your balance.
High-tops - Restrict ankle mobility. You need free movement for proper rope technique.
Worn-out soles - No grip means slipping. If your treads are smooth, it's time for new shoes.
The Barefoot Question
Some advanced jumpers go barefoot or use minimal shoes. Better ground feel, natural foot strength. But start with shoes - build up your calf and foot strength first.
Surface Matters Too
Hard concrete + bad shoes = joint pain. If you're jumping on hard surfaces, your shoes matter even more. A rubber mat helps.
Coach Joaquín's advice: "Your feet are your foundation. Treat them right."
The right shoes won't make you a pro overnight, but the wrong ones will definitely hold you back. Choose wisely.
